Macquarie Bank, based in Sydney, has been operating in Australia since 1969, where it started as a three person office under the name Hill Samuel Australia and gained an Australian Banking license as Macquarie Bank Limited in 1985. Macquarie Bank takes inspiration from the first official currency, the holey dollar. Created in a burst of fiscal ingenuity, Australian Governor Lachlan Macquarie solved a currency shortage by importing Spanish silver dollars and taking the core out of the middle, creating two differently sized coins both valued at 25% more than the original coin.
