Starting out as the Bank of Western Australia, Bankwest rebranded in the 1990s before coming under the umbrella of Commonwealth Bank of Australia in 2008. However, it continues to operate separately in the home lending space, offering simple and competitive home loans.
Its aptly named Bankwest Simple Home Loan offers flexible payments, optional 100% offset accounts (at $10 per month), no application fee, and no annual fees.
Its Complete Variable Home Loan comes as part of a package with other bank products, such as free offset accounts, a credit card with no annual fee (optional), and some fee waivers.
Interest rates vary according to loan-to-value ratio (LVR) and other factors, and both loans can be split between a variable rate and a fixed rate.
You may find Bankwest a good fit if you:
Are comfortable with digital banking
Bankwest no longer has a branch network, with its remaining regional branches converting to CommBank branches in October 2024. It is now a fully digital bank.
Are looking for a low interest rate
Bankwest typically offers highly competitive interest rates, with attractive terms and conditions.
Want flexibility
The bank's variable rate loans offer flexibility with the option of multiple 100% offset accounts, unlimited additional payments, redraw facilities, and the ability to split loans between a variable and a fixed interest rate.
Have a larger deposit or equity
Bankwest offers lower interest rates to borrowers with large deposits for both owner occupier and investor loans.
Have a smaller deposit
Bankwest will consider loan applications for up to 98% LVR, including lenders mortgage insurance (LMI), on a case-by-case basis.
Have been self-employed for less than two years
The bank will accept a minimum of 18 months ABN registration in cases where a borrower's LVR is less than 80%.
