Penthouses are usually found within city-centres, but this type of dwelling is becoming a thing even in far-flung suburbs in Sydney.
In a report for The Daily Telegraph, Turner associate director James McCarthy noted that penthouse-living is becoming popular in areas including Sutherland Shire and the Hills region as cashed-up downsizers move homes without heading far.
“These buyers are transitioning from large family homes to apartments, and penthouse living gives them that extra flexibility and space that they’re accustomed to without having to move away," McCarthy told The Daily Telegraph.
He added that these downsizers are also influencing the designs and layouts of penthouses, adding several other spaces for butler's pantry, media and study rooms, and another living area.
One of the recent penthouse projects in the Hills district is Esplanade Norwest of Capital Corporation where units range from 144-171 square metres.
For PRDnationwide Norwest director David Inkster, Esplanade Norwest's penthouses were sold to local downsizers looking for a "convenient lock-and-leave home." He added that penthouses provide homebuyers with space and privacy while requiring less maintenance compared to landed homes.
"All the amenities of a resort are on your doorstep — restaurants, shops and swimming pools," Inkster said, as quoted by The Daily Telegraph.
