The Onkaparinga Council in South Australia has been urged to revise its rules on medium-density housing after some 100 residents complained that allowing three-storey homes and block sizes as small as 150 square metres would be “destroying their neighbourhoods”.

The meeting between the residents and the council last week was part of a review of its medium density living policy introduced in 2010. It was designed to allow for 45,000 extra residents by 2032.

For resident Andrew Harrison, medium-density living is inevitable in the area.

“There are plenty of examples around of great architecture rather than just putting together a one size fits all home,” he said.

Another resident told News.com.au seven houses were being built behind his property, likening the congestion to “living like rabbits”.
