Say no to water wasting homes

Archicentre has made its mission clear in calling on state governments to put all capital cities and suburbs on a water-saving restriction alert. The building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects has also called for new legislation to be brought in from 1 July this year, banning the sale of homes without water efficient showerheads and dual-flush toilets. The call comes after the Victorian Government's adoption of Archicentre's compulsory 'water roadworthy' checks for all homes being sold. Archicentre said this is part of a national water strategy which should be implemented in our time of worsening water crisis. Robert Caulfield, managing director, Archicentre, said since the announcement of the proposal, the company has received a lot of support; something they will keep in mind for their inspections. "Archicentre will add water-efficient showerheads and dual-flush toilets to its check lists for prospective purchasers," Caulfield said. With approximately 40% of wastage being attributed to the bathroom and toilet, Archicentre predicts up to 20,000 litres per person per year (calculated by a six minute shower) could be saved using a three star rated showerhead. The company is also promoting households to switch to energy efficient light bulbs, obtain better insulation and ventilation, utilise overhanging eaves and install shade pergolas; all to combat global warming. Mr Angus Kell, state manager, NSW & ACT Archicentre, said: "A better use of materials in construction, orientation of buildings to maximise solar energy, and lessening the use of airconditioners and heaters in homes and offices could make a major impact on global warming".
