Australia’s military elite, the Special Air Service Regiment, might lose their prime beachfront real estate as the Federal Government plans to make it part of an historic sale set to gain over $10m.
Families were informed about the plan to redevelop Swanbourne’s Seaward Village on Monday, where a quarter of the enclave will be sold as private homes to developers.
The West Australian
reported that the construction will commence in 2017, as long as it gains the approval of the State and council.
The families were promised to still have a high level of security around the community despite the planned on-site civilian community.
Income from the sale of the land shall fund a $180m redevelopment of Seaward Village, which will require the old defence homes to be demolished.
The village has 153 Defence Housing Australia (DHA) homes at the moment – a number that will boom to 165 by the time the project is completed by 2020.
Assistant Minister for Defence Stuart Robert assured that families can stay if they wish, but newly posted troopers might have to be accommodated off base in suburbs nearby. Others will be relocated into the new homes in tranches.
Meanwhile, DHA is also eyeing a number of new rental properties in Perth's western suburbs to accommodate SAS personnel and their families.
