A new report from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat showed there are 35 skyscrapers over 200 metres that are in the pipeline across Australia. It also noted that 29 of them are set to erect in Melbourne alone, and 31 are to become mixed-use buildings.
said some of Melbourne’s buildings will include the 319-metre Australia 108 tower, the 308-metre Queensbridge Tower and the 250 Spencer Street Tower 1 at 297 metres. All are set to be completed in five years.
Other cities such as Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra are catching up with Sydney and Melbourne in terms of constructing residential skyscrapers.
In fact, Adelaide welcomed the plan for a $100m, 27-storey apartment building last month, which is deemed to be the city’s tallest structure to date.
“It appears that most Australians are showing an ongoing preference to live in capital cities rather than regional markets," said a report by RP Data senior research analyst Cameron Kusher. "When you consider the concentration of jobs across the nation, most are found in capital cities and the majority of these jobs are found in just a handful of these capital cities.”
