The grandson of LJ Hooker founder Sir Leslie Hooker has bought the real estate firm from Suncorp for $67m, a company statement has revealed.

Suncorp confirmed today that Janusz Hooker has acquired Hooker Corp Ltd, which includes the LJ Hooker's real estate and mortgage broking businesses.

The Australian reported that the move will see Hooker resign from his position at the head of private equity firm WP Carey and take the position of executive chairman in his new business. Hooker said he intended to introduce a series of measures which will see the 81-year-old real estate firm expand its operations in both Australia and Asia.

The firm was founded in 1928 and opened its first office in Sydney. The Hooker family sold the company in the 1970s and went into liquidation less than a decade later. Suncorp bought the company, which is Australia's second-largest real estate firm with 700 real estate franchises in both here and Asia-Pacific, in 1989.
